Budget Deal Reached

A budget deal has been reached.  I have nothing more to say, because I am tired.  My special edition of the KaibCast might end abruptly if I collapse onto my computer was rescheduled for 6 PM eastern Saturday night. If you missed it, you can listen to it on demand by clicking on the hyperlink in this paragraph.

Democrats: Be Careful What You Wish For

NationalJournal.com – Democrats: Be Careful What You Wish For With Shutdown – Friday, April 8, 2011.

Some Democrats, particularly the slime ball of the Senate, Chuckie Shumer, seem gleeful over the possibility of a government shutdown.  Apparently they think this could be good for the Democrats.  Not so fast, Chuck…

From Matthew Dowd, writing at NationalJournal.com:

Here’s five differences in the two pictures:

1-At the beginning of the shutdown, Clinton’s Gallup job approval numbers were 6 to 7 points higher than Obama’s today. A much better place to communicate from for Clinton.

2-Republicans held both branches of Congress in 1995 and so the clarity of blame was much easier than today when only the House is controlled by Republicans.

3-The unemployment rate in 1995 going into the shutdown was 5.6 percent, down nearly two points since Clinton took office. And while the unemployment rate has dropped a bit in last few months, it sits at 8.8 percent, higher than when Obama took office. In 1995, folks were relatively satisfied with Clinton’s handling of the economy, today voters are very dissatisfied with Obama’s handling of it, and anxiety and dismay persist through the country.

The Coming Shutdown

It is looking increasingly likely that some sort of shutdown will occur.  This is a disappointment, not because an agreement hasn’t been reached or because a shutdown is the end of the world, but because we should have never been in this situation in the first place.  Prior to the 2010 election, Democrats had the responsibility to pass a budget.  They didn’t, and now we are all suffering.

The budget debate is seemingly revolving around Republicans wanting to strip Planned Parenthood and other left-wing pet causes of federal funding.  Democrats claim this is the GOP forcing its social viewpoints onto the country.  But isn’t it also true that Democrats are doing the same thing when they give the federal funding to Planned Parenthood and other groups in the first place?  It appears to me that both sides of the aisle like to force their social views on the country.

Short Takes: 4/8/11

I’m lazy because it’s Friday, so I won’t be writing any long posts about stuff (Oh, well. I got worked up about the budget and had to write about it here).  And yes, I realize that I haven’t done any “Around the World in 80 Words” posts lately, but that’s because I don’t have an intern whom I could foist the responsibility onto.  So here’s the first “Short Takes” in a while.

Story one:

Is Japan hiding a nuclear weapons program inside power plants?  That’s what some guy I never heard of is asking at ‘New American Media,” whatever that is.  I only find this story interesting because I like conspiracy theories.  I’m no Alex Jones, and I don’t normally believe the crazy stories, but I still like reading about them and imagining that they’re real.
